Is there a way to modify notes directly on the canvas?
Also, is there a way to make a new note instead of a card on the canvas?
Double-click the note you want to edit.
To insert a (new) note, you can either right-click with the mouse and choose the respective submenu-item or drag the icon in the middle of the bottom toolbar:
