Cannot Open Windows Installer 1.8.3 on Windows 10 (blocked)

Context:

  • Running obsidian on a company computer. I need to request admin credentials to update, but that is usual all there is to it.
  • Currently running Obsidian 1.8.2. Computer is running Windows 10 Enterprise version 22H2.
  • My computer is in French, so I will be translating the information given by my computer as best as I can for this post.

What I’m trying to do

Update Obsidian to v1.8.3 for windows.

When I run the 1.8.3 installer, my computer gives me the following message: “This application cannot be run on your PC. To find a version for your PC, please contact the software publisher.”

Things I have tried

  • Looked in the help section; I did not find anything pertaining to the windows versions being supported (which makes sense given that there is a universal download for windows).
  • Searched in the forums: a mish mash of the update version, words from my error message, download errors.
  • Tried redownloading the file.
  • Rebooting my computer.

I downloaded and installed the new installer on Win11 without issue, but someone on Discord had an issue earlier installing the v1.8.3.exe:

Maybe try what they mentioned?

Smart Screen is blocking my installation as well. As I do not have Admins rights on my computer, I cant deactivate it nor can I apply an exemption. For me, this needs to be fixed on the obsidian side of things. I read on reddit that some kind of signing key needs to be changed for Microsoft to not block Obsidian. Please help by saying if this will happen and how long its gonna take. thanks!

I’ve had the same issue with downloading as well. :pensive:

What works for me is to locate the file in Explorer, right click and choose properties. On the General tab on the bottom check the box that says “Unblock”. Apply and Ok out.

louiss, I think you may be experiencing the Window 10 version of Win 11 Smart-Screen. You can manually unblock a single installer as writtenfool described.

Otherwise you can globally change what windows blocks in Settings>App

Our App is signed correctly with a newer key. Perhaps it hasn’t gained enough reputation with Microsoft. It’s a matter of time.

I guess I’m left with waiting for microsoft to support; given WhiteNoise’s reply…

Downloaded 1.8.4 this morning. I tried unblocking it in properties and running it in Powershell. This is the resulting translated message:
