Obsidian on IOS

Cannot open vault from folder

I am trying to use Obsidian on my iPhone and would like to use pre-existing markup files to start a vault. However, I only see options for “How to setup sync” and “Create new vault” when I enter the app, with no option to open a vault from a local folder.

On iOS/iPadOS, due to sandboxing/restrictions Obsidian can only access vaults and files within a dedicated Obsidian folder located either at:

  • Files app:

    • iCloud Drive > Obsidian
→ For vaults stored in and synced through iCloud between devices
    • On My iPhone/iPad > Obsidian
→ For vaults stored locally on your device(s) and potentially synced through another service than iCloud (Obsidian Sync, etc…)

There could be a bit more info about the dedicated Obsidian folder here though : Sync your notes across devices - Obsidian Help

The way to get started for you is the “Create new vault” option, even for files that already exist.

Right now, you have files on your phone but no Obsidian vault. So you would create the vault, and the process gives you the option to select your existing folder as the vault’s location—as long as that folder is available to Obsidian, per the info Pch shared.
