Can someone explain how do I get familiar with advanced stuff?

I want to get the most out of obsidian for ways of managing my productivity, daily priorities, and thoughts, and I have done some organization for the same. I am mostly a noob in terms of note taking, in the sense that I have a good technical background, but I’ve always been a very traditional maker of notes, so to speak.
What I’m struggling with is the number of possibilities the app gives me to work around. I’m overburdened with so much information, especially watching youtube videos on it, which has sent my mind very deeply into being even more excited to use as many features as I can and maybe even think of more to add. How do I get there. If someone can share how they approached working on Obsidian, then please help out.

just take notes as feels natural. when you start feeling like “hmm, I wish it could do X” look it up and most likely you can with a plugin or core feature. It’s better to learn and apply things as you need than get overwhelmed with stuff you may not

i remember starting out just like this…
i installed the app and didn’t touch it for weeks…
i kept wanting to take in the scope of the app…watched videos…
then i started to divide my time between writing and trying out advanced stuff…
first trying out plugins like commander and its macros…
then templater, dataview…
it takes time and you can’t go too hard on yourself

piece of advice: look for cue words in the forum, such as tasks, clipboard, etc. and take notes on how certain stuff is done in obsidian, copying out css code and the like…

looking back a year on you’ll have a pretty decent setup with customizations that can help you be productive

I have ADHD and I’ve struggled with productivity my whole life, which has led me to geek out on related techniques and systems. One thing I’ve learned is that productivity is highly personal: what works for me may be awful for you and vice versa. There is no one particular setup that ensures getting the most out of a productivity system that works for everyone.

Like others above, I also recommend just starting to take notes. Soon you’ll think of some functionality that would really help you achieve some important thing. That’s when you should look up how to implement it. Obsidian is so highly customisable that the traditional approach where you first get acquainted with everything it can do and then choose which parts you want isn’t really doable.

That said, when I started around a month ago, I did watch a fair bit of videos on YouTube. Vault tours, ‘best plugins’ listings, introductions on how to use the plugins that seemed interesting to me, etc. But I didn’t try to implement anything yet, I just watched these as entertainment, so that I gained understanding of what types of things are possible in Obsidian and how other people have customised their systems.

Now that I’m using mine and I get an idea, I usually have some inkling on whether or not it’s possible to do and how to start trying.
