Break free from Vaults

Use case or problem

Unfortunately, limiting Obsidian to vaults means my Obsidian notes do not follow my existing, well-established Windows folder organization…unless I try to mimic it, which is a ton of work and prone to error.

I’ve tried creating a Vault at the root of my Windows data, but Obsidian gets crushed presumably trying to index everything (I have millions of files).

Proposed solution

I believe if an alternate paradigm was supported, it could greatly improve Obsidian adoption. Allow user to set Obsidian as the default app for .md files. That way Obsidian notes can be located anywhere in my folder system, organized logically with all of my other relevant data, docs, files.

You may need to optimize the indexer to only index .md files, obviously folder structure could be much larger, but this should be technically feasible.

Current workaround (optional)

I sort of try to create folders in Obsidian with similar structure, but really, this is too cumbersome, so everything just sits in one folder.
