Better strategies to split Vault in work and privat

So far, I have kept all my notes in a vault, and I find the concept to be completely logical. I sync the vault between my work and personal laptops and phone using Syncthing (I am allowed to use my work laptop for personal use). However, concerns about data protection and maintaining a clear separation between my work and personal life have led me to consider keeping my personal notes separate from my work laptop. I am now looking for ideas on how best to implement this.

Many of my notes can clearly be sorted into “Career” and “Private,” and there are no links between them. I could create two vaults. However, some notes are not so easy to classify because I need or use them in both contexts. I’m not sure how to deal with those.

One idea is to create a separate vault for really private notes, such as a diary or medical entries, and leave everything else, including private projects, in a “main vault.” Then, I would have to sync the main vault with my personal laptop. This isn’t a problem in itself, but it would blur the line between my work and personal life.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Addendum: A third vault with generic notes does not work, as I cannot then link from the other vaults.

If you search for “protect” in Community plugins, you’ll get a few plugins. I haven’t tried any of them; I was just reading the descriptions. Some of them just password-protect note(s) from opening, which sounds great - but I guess you can still open those files from Explorer/Finder. Some of them use encryption and/or a password. Per note or vault.

I would go in this direction and try some of those plugins.

Thank you. My vault is alteady encrypted (veracrypt).

In addition to security, I’m also more interested in finding a way to separate my professional and private life. Even if there is some overlapping content.

The three key points for me are

  • I know where information belongs and where I can find it.
  • I can link information
  • I have a separation of “professional/carrer” and private context and content.

The security aspect of having my work laptop free of personal information, especially sensitive medical data and diary entries, is of course added to this.

Having everything in one vault is actually ideal, but thwarts the separation of contexts and the security aspect.

One solution I came up with: I collect all shared content in a subfolder, which I then keep synchronized via syncthing. As I mainly link to the shared notes from “outside”, I suspect that there won’t be many conflicts.
