Beginner question: Using ChatGPT with Obsidian

First, search the help docs and this forum. Maybe your question has been answered! The debugging steps can help, too. Still stuck? Delete this line and proceed.

I’m new to Obsidian and want to use it as a personal knowledge base for my ideas and useful conversations.

I mainly use ChatGPT Voice Mode and would like to save important insights in Obsidian, so I can find them later and connect related ideas.

I’m not a programmer, so I’m looking for a simple setup that doesn’t require too much technical knowledge or extra costs.

What’s the easiest way to get started? Does anyone here use Obsidian alongside ChatGPT and have any beginner-friendly tips?

Thanks for your help!

Things I have tried

Welcome! You don’t need any plugins or code for this. A simple setup that works well:

  1. Make one folder, for example AI insights.
  2. After a voice conversation, open that chat in the ChatGPT app and ask something like: “Summarize the useful insights from this conversation as Markdown, with a short title and bullet points.” Copy the answer and paste it into a new note in that folder. The Markdown formatting carries over.
  3. At the end of the note, add a line like Related: [[...]] and link one or two existing notes it connects to (typing [[ shows suggestions). Those links, plus the Backlinks pane, are what let you connect ideas later. The Graph view shows them too.
  4. Optionally add a tag such as #idea so you can filter for those notes in search.

Search across all notes (Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+F) covers the full text, so you don’t need a perfect folder structure up front. Start with one folder and a few links, and add structure only when you feel you need it.

If you ever want the full transcripts, ChatGPT’s settings have a data export that emails you all your conversations, but for a knowledge base the short summaries are usually more useful than raw transcripts.
