Bases in card view crash on mobile if it has to render many images, including gifs

Steps to reproduce

  1. Create a new vault and populate it with images of different formats, including animated .gif and .webp (I tested with around 2000).
  2. Create new base, set it to cards view and and select “file” as “Image property”
  3. Sync the vault with mobile if not already. (I tested with iOS)
  4. Try to open the base created earlier and scroll down
  5. Observe your obsidian crushing and going into restart each time you try to view this base

(6). Optionally, to make the bug more common, organize them in a way that part of the images are located in different folders, not just one (for example sub-folders under the main one)

Interestingly, setting a limit of only 100, 50 or even just 10 results doesn’t necessarily solve the issue, and even with a limit in place obsidian crashes. The problem becomes more severe with obsidian crushing immediately the more folders and animated images vault contains, even if filters limit the amount of results to some relatively small values.

Did you follow the troubleshooting guide? [Y/N]

Y
Yes, I tested it with a brand new vault with default theme and no plugins whatsoever. It crashed less than in my default vault (probably because it has less folders) but still crashed.

Expected result

Obsidian doesn’t crush each time I try to view image-heavy base, and I am actually able to scroll through it uninterrupted. Maybe it doesn’t load all the previews at once, but doesn’t restart the moment I try to scroll.

Actual result

Obsidian restarts.

I don’t think the number of folder is relevant. The problem may be the images, specifically the gifs.

Can you zip your vault, upload it somewhere and DM me a link to it?

Unfortunately this would require me to share a big gallery of mostly just personal photographs that I don’t feel comfortable sharing, but I’m pretty confident the bug will be triggered by any big enough attachments folder featuring animated .gif and .webp files.

The bug still exists in 2026 with 1.12.4 version of obsidian, and I have a zip of a vault with nothing but around 70 pictures and a base that displays them, scrolling which on mobile causes a crash-restart cycle. Should I send a DM?

Yes, upload It somewhere and dm the link to me.
