Base empty in sidebar

What I’m trying to do

I’ve created a few bases for related items (books, articles) from my notes. They worked fine both when dragged into a note and when dragged into the sidebar. But for some reason they’ve all stopped working in the sidebar while they’re working fine when I drag them into a note. In the base in the note I get the correct result, in the sidebar I get 0 results.

Things I have tried

  • I’ve searched forums, but found no similar topics.
  • I’ve tried the same thing with different notes, it’s happening every time.
  • I’ve tried choosing another template for appearance (I use minimal), but that didn’t make any difference.
  • I’ve tried to rebuild the base from scratch, same result: it works when dragged into a note, but it gives no results in the sidebar.
  • I’ve made the same base from scratch in another vault and it’s working fine there, both in the note and in the sidebar.

Does your base use any this self-references?

An update made this no longer resolve to the .base file. You now need an active note for this to point to.

So it’ll work when embedded. It also should work from the sidebar once you make a note active. But of course, this will refer to the note, not the .base file, so the results might not be what you originally planned.

Thanks for your reply @dawni. I use file.hasLink(this.file.name) and I’m aware I have to have a note active for it to work. But I get no results in the sidebar, whether I have an active note or not. In my other vault it’s working fine with that same filter.

Let’s try to eliminate factors such as paths, filters, typos, etc., to figure out what could be the cause.

  • When you embed your base in a note like ![[example.base]], does the base work? (You said “when dragged into a note”, so I’m just making sure we’re talking about the same thing.)

  • But that same base in the sidebar with the same active note doesn’t work?

  • Is all of this is on the same device?

  • Are you displaying the base in the left or right sidebar, not in the main workspace in a way that happens to be a tab beside another tab? As in, when you toggle the sidebar closed, the base closes with the sidebar? (Sorry if it sounds like a silly mistake, but someone has made it before!)

  • Since you’re getting different results in different vaults: Have you tried turning on restricted mode (or if you’re on mobile, disabling all plugins and restarting Obsidian) and also disabling all snippets and switching to the default theme? Just to confirm none of those are acting up.

If you feel like sharing the base code and any relevant properties and paths, someone might be able to spot more areas to investigate.

Thank you so very much, @dawni! It WAS the fourth thing you mentioned, I was absolutely not aware of it. It’s working again and I’m so happy I can stop looking for the solution!
