Audio Recorder Plugin Bug - Error in new recordings

Was told by Obsidian support to post this here as a bug report…

I have been using Obsidian these past 3 months and have found this to be an excellent solution for taking and organizing my work and personal notes. Recently however, I have run into an issue with using the audio recorded core plugin, and I am hoping you can provide the fix.

Over the past 3 months, I have been leveraging this plugin to record voice memos to myself within my iPhone’s obsidian app. This is then auto-synced to the cloud vault via my “Sync Plus” plan so that I have full access to these voice memos on my dell windows laptop within Obsidian there. These are typically 30-60 minutes in length, and each audio recording is approximately 20-80MB in size.

Just last week however, any new audio recording that I make in obsidian is saying it is 0:00 in length and only 1kb in attachment filesize.

Here are the troubleshooting steps I have taken so far:

  • Verified I have plenty of available storage space on my iPhone (22GB free) and Obsidian Sync vault (4.6GB free).
Verified I can successfully make audio recordings within other iPhone apps (e.g. voice memo)
  • Deleted the obsidian app from my iPhone, reinstalled the latest version, and then resynced with my master online vault…still getting same error after.
  • Confirmed that my iPhone has granted permissions for obsidian to use my phone’s microphone. Toggled this off and back on multiple times.
  • Verified I can still make obsidian audio recordings on my Dell laptop’s obsidian app that sync across all devices and are playable (yes this works).

Based on all of these steps, and the fact that the issue seems isolated to the iPhone app, what do you recommend for a fix?

Additional troubleshooting results - I was able to download the obsidian mobile app to a second iPhone, set up sync, enable the audio recording plugin, and provide access to the microphone. It works. All of the recordings I am making are syncing across all my devices as it should.

Seems then like this issue is isolated to my personal iPhone. Still confused then why deleting and reinstalling the latest app on my personal iPhone isnt resolving this. Ideas?

Ok just solved this issue while talking through possible root causes with ChatGPT (advanced voice mode for the win). Since it worked on my work iPhone but not on my personal iPhone, I started to think through what the differences could be, and immediately realized my personal iPhone was running the developer beta of iOS 18. As soon as I disabled this it solved my issue completely.

Issue reappeared today with my iPhone being auto-upgraded to iOS 18.4. Something in the iOS is blocking obsidian form being able to record and sync audio through it’s core plugin.

I don’t think iOS 18.4 is out yet. You should send a bug report to Apple because they clearly have changed something.
