Android Note Privacy

Hi - new to Obsidian, looks great.

Regarding syncing my notes and the matter of privacy: On my Linux systems, there is no telemetry or scanning, so setting up folders is private. If I use the Obsidian sync service to access my notes on my new Samsung phone, will Obsidian simply replicate the folder structure on my device? Or will it pull it from your server without downloading all the files?

I am concerned that the notes are not private, if the folders are replicated as they would be on a PC. Just wanting to understand how it works. I have Google/Microsoft/Android/Samsung reading/scanning everything on my phone for various purposes and there’s not a lot I can do about it, but I want to prevent this for Obsidian. I am coming over from Standard Notes so I am used to privacy and encryption on the actual device, not just for data in transit.

Is there a way to have mobile access without allowing Big Tech to read my notes?

Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

If you don’t trust your device, that’s a hard position to be in.

Obsidian Sync makes a full copy of your vault on every device (excepting files that exceed the maximum file size and any you’ve excluded from sync). It does not encrypt the files on the device — only between devices.
