Once you’ve done the above, delete everything above this line.
Steps to reproduce
Open one app. It doesn’t matter whether Obsidian or the other app is opened first. “Other apps” include browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Brace and DuckDuckGo) and VLC Media Player.
Open second app (either Obsidian or one of the above).
Activate the Split Screen function.
Select one app for the top half. It doesn’t matter which app is selected for top or bottom app.
Select other app for the bottom window.
Did you follow the troubleshooting guide? Yes
Expected result
I expected to see the Mobile Tool bar at the bottom of the Obsidian window, as I’ve become accustomed to seeing.
Actual result
When I attempt to edit my note, no mobile toolbar appears. Instead, I get the icons that are normally along the bottom of Tab View.
The only way I could access commands in Split Screen mode was by using the “hamburger” at the bottom right of my screen.
When Obsidian is in full screen mode, the “Tab View icons” are replaced by the mobile toolbar when I want to edit my note.

Android too. It appears when using the split screen and the full width keyboard and disappears when switching to the floating. I still have the palette on top, but it’s missing the bracket and attach icons
I am having a similar issue on Android where just using split screen causes the mobile toolbar to disappear. I am not sure in my case it is at all related to the floating keyboard, but it related to having the app be split screen.
If the app is not in focus (meaning that if you type on the soft keyboard, the text doesn’t go to the Obsidian’s note), I don’t think the writing toolbar should appear.
I’m not sure if you’re replying to my original bug report or one of our other friends in this thread. And perhaps I didn’t communicate clearly.
I was trying to type (on the stock Android “Gboard”) into my note. You might notice the little cursor cursor teardrop where I was trying to add to my existing note. My Obsidian setup on this phone is to display the full (“stock”) Mobile Toolbar above the keyboard as I edit my notes. It works splendidly, as it has before. And before this latest update, it worked (meaning the Mobile Toolbar) was there in both full-screen and split-screen mode.
With the latest update, I have my Mobile Toolbar in full-screen mode (as before) but, in split-screen mode, the Mobile Toolbar changes to that tab-mode toolbar in my image in my OP. If you’d like more images or more information, I’d be happy to provide them to the best of my abilities. Thank you.
This is not necessarily a bug if Obsidian is not the active recipient of keyboard events. If you split the screen the keyboard maybe active in the text field of the other app.
Thanks for helping us out with this, WhiteNoise. In a general sense, you bring up a good point. In this instance, the facts that the active cursor teardrop being on my Obsidian note (and that the Android operating system expanded the Obsidian window when I wanted to type on my note) suggest to me that the operating system and/or the keyboard understands that I want to type and correctly selects the Obsidian window to be the active recipient of keyboard events.
When I opened this thread, I wanted to be thorough but succinct, so I limited the screenshots I originally posted. Because no one really wants to scroll past lots of unnecessary pictures. But my decision might not have provided the accurate chain of events. So:
Obsidian, in Single Screen, ready to be edited (Note the Mobile toolbar above the keyboard and the cursor indicator teardrop):
Go into Split Screen mode (Example here is with DuckDuckGo browser, but this will be the same with the browsers mentioned above, as well as other mainstream programs):
Note how Android has resized the correct window, and shrunk the appropriate window. This (plus the fact that the keyboard is activated) further suggests to me that the system is selecting the correct active recipient of keyboard events.
Notice how Android has again selected the correct windows to expand (and to shrink) as the active recipient of keyboard events.
Obsidian has functioned the way I’m requesting for the 3-4 years that Android Split Screen mode has been available and that I’ve been using Obsidian. In fact, it functioned this way right up to the day before I installed the latest version (v.1.8.10) on this phone. I can’t remember precisely when I last updated Gboard and my Android security patches, but it was sometime before Obsidian’s latest release.
Regardless of whether you and I call this a bug, the Obsidian ui-ux people (I’m sure) will know that, in Android, the gesture to call up the Command Palette is to swipe down from the top of the screen. Of course, in Split Screen mode, that (understandably) never worked (or, to be more accurate, never worked for me). But that was never an issue because there was always the Mobile toolbar. Without the Mobile toolbar now, the only standard way to access the Command Palette in Split Screen mode is through the hamburger in the lower right of the screen.
I hope this helps you to better understand my report. Thanks again for helping us out with this.
Hi, I made an Obsidian Forum account to comment that I am experiencing exactly the same issue and it’s really hampered how I’ve gotten used to using Obsidian on my Android mobile phone.
I believe this ability to split screen and have the mobile toolbar available while editing in Obsidian is an essential feature, as it’s really useful to have the reference material in front of your eyes while typing notes in Obsidian.
Things like indenting, adding bullets and headers are so much more natural to do through the toolbar.
Please can this issue be addressed as this is the main way I add notes while I’m out commuting, and it’s very cumbersome having to entirely switch apps rather than being able to split screen as I had been able to do so before.
