Use case or problem
Limiting the number of files in a folder (the vault) for quicker and smoother operations of the filesystem and meaningful segregation of file types/resources/notes
Proposed solution
Allowing daily notes/journal entries of a vault to occupy a separate, external folder from the main notes folder on the filesystem; if possible, extending the feature to have a separate settings/configuration folder too.
Current workaround (optional)
Currently, daily notes are used in the vault, but some external folders are symlinked into the vault folder for visibility/access in Obsidian.
Related feature requests (optional)
Though this request is about spreading out the contents of the vault over multiple folders on the filesystem, segregation of note types/ideas is also talked about in Nested vaults - usage and risks.
Details
Since daily notes accumulate to quite a number of files and the number of files in a folder is better limited, it would be nice if obsidian can incorporate a separate, external folder, one for daily notes/journal entries, from the notes folder as part of a vault.
I realise a problem could arise if the same folder is chosen to be a part of more than one vault. Maybe in this case, the onus is placed on the user to ensure that is not the case, or a warning message might be displayed for the user to check that that is not the case when selecting a separate folder for daily notes as part of a vault.
This concern might be a non-issue inasmuch as the number of files in a folder that an operating system can optimally handle being large compared to what one might aggregate in a vault. However, I see a use case for people with very large vaults (mine’s nowhere near that) and for segregation of clearly delineated types of files (journal daily notes, settings, media resources as attachments, project files related to notes, and even files related to publishing online, for example).
The following could be classified as a separate feature request, but is in line with the above-mentioned request.
If a separate folder could be used for daily notes, a step further, if possible, would be to allow a selection of folders to be part of a vault. This would obviate the requirement of using symlinks where such needs arise, for example. I realise that this probably is beyond the scope of Obsidian as a repository for notes and treads into file management space. Kindly excuse me if that is the case and thank you for the wonderful software that I have had the pleasure to use since it’s inception.
