Adjusting level of heading in outline pane

In longer documents with many different headings, it’s currently possible to move sections (including their content) around using drag-and-drop in the outline pane. However, there’s no way to adjust the heading level at the same time.

For example, I often start organizing a map by structuring it with several first-level headings. As the map grows, more subheadings are added, and the outline pane becomes more detailed. If I then realize that a level-3 heading at the bottom of the note fits better under a different first-level heading further up, I’d like to move the level-3 heading up and adjust its level to level 2 at the same time.

This could be made possible by allowing users to drag headings in the outline pane left or right while moving them to adjust the heading level—dragging left to decrease the level and right to increase it.

This is a great suggestion and something I’d dearly like.

  1. This would allow a user to emulate outliner type software, easily rearranging nested content.
  2. A good analogy is also folders; imagining each header to be like a folder for the content, the action is like moving a folder to within a new parent. Right now, we’d be constrainted to having each block being of a fixed depth/heading level.

As a workaround I recommend using Heading Shifter plugin which makes it much easier to change heading levels.
