Additional Obsidian windows are not remembered upon restart

Once you’ve done the above, delete everything above this line.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open any vault with Obsidian 1.8.4 (Windows desktop)
  2. Open some notes in at least two different Obsidian windows
  3. Restart Obsidian
  4. Only the main window is reopened

Alternatively:

  1. Open Obsidian 1.8.3
  2. Open multiple tabs, across multiple Windows
  3. Upgrade to Obsidian 1.8.4
  4. Restart Obsidian
  5. See how you lose the extra open Windows, all tabs, and your recent history

Did you follow the troubleshooting guide? [Y/N]

Y

  • Disabling theme, CSS (had none) and community addons had no affect.
  • Sandbox Vault isn’t helpful in this case as it does not retain its state between restarts, by design

Expected result

Obsidian to remember, and restore, all open windows and tabs. Recent history should never be cleared, unless purposefully triggered by the user.

Actual result

This happened immediately after upgrading to v1.8.4, on the Windows desktop app. I haven’t started using the mobile app yet, so cannot speak towards that side. I have tried this on two different vaults and both produced the same results after the upgrade.

The first time after the upgrade, both vaults opened a blank main window (no open notes at all), none of the other windows from my last session, and the recent history was completely wiped out.

Since then, Obsidian will never remember any extra open windows, but does reopen the main window with all tabs. On occasion, none of the tabs will re-open and the recent history is cleared, but I have not been able to reproduce it consistently.

I’ll close this one, thanks.

Although, let me know if that thread seems different than what you experienced. It sounds the same from what I read.

(Since you said it happens inconsistently, another thing that might be related to inconsistent settings is if you are using a cloud tool that is offloading your settings files to the cloud.)

Sorry, guess I searched too quickly for duplicates. Will improve next time.
