Additional files no longer opening in new panes

What I’m trying to do

I have seen this problem raised a couple of times over the past couple of years and it always flames out…without any clear resolution so far as I can see. The topic gets closed. I’m trying to open additional files in new panes so that I can look at more than one at a time across my screen. For some reason this morning when I try to open an additional file to view simultaneously (I use a Windows Keyboard with a Mac Mini) I press Window + click on file (as usual) and it opens it in a new tab but this tab is sharing the same pane as the previous and covers the entire display. Things I have tried

Oddly I just right clicked an option - open to right - which seems to resolve it. Is this new or do I have some kind of cognitive impairment!!

I’m on a mac at the moment with a mac keyboard:

click → replaces the note in the current tab with the one clicked on.
cmd + click → opens a new tab in the same tab group.
cmd + option + click → opens the note in a new tab group to the right.

You may be remembering the behavior before version 1.0 (when tabs were introduced). Pre v1.0, a cmd/ctrl + click created a new “pane” to the right if I recall correctly.
