I got deeply into Markdown after losing a non-trivial number of documents in the 1990s and early-2000s due to their proprietary applications ceasing to exist (most, but not all, have since been recovered thanks to LibreOffice). I resolved to make my documents software-independent and have been using Markdown ever since (and absolutely adore Obsidian since finding it in late-2023).
