Windows Desktop Search Crashes Obsidian if Searching for common letters with "show more context" toggled on

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open vault
  2. Open left side panel
  3. Switch to search
  4. Toggle show more context
    4.5) Toggle explain search terms
  5. Type in single letter “p”

Yes, I tried in the sandbox but I couldn’t reproduce since it didn’t have as many files. My vault has ~1080 files.

Expected result

I expected to be able to type the rest of my search, photos, for example. I wanted to search for something.

Actual result

Obsidian search stopped at the letter “p.” and crashed. I tested it two more times and it kept crashing if I had “show more context” on.

Custom theme and snippets: for cosmetic issues, please first try updating your theme and disabling your snippets. If still not fixed, please try to make the issue happen in the Sandbox Vault or disable community theme and snippets.
Community plugins: for bugs, please first try updating all your plugins to latest. If still not fixed, please try to make the issue happen in the Sandbox Vault or disable community plugins.

Switch to the default theme, and enable restricted mode via Settings > Community Plugins > Restricted mode > Turn on and reload.

Does search work now?

If yes, then go through your plugins and theme to find out which might be causing the issue.

If no, then keep restricted mode on and try enabling or disabling hardware acceleration (whichever it wasn’t already in Settings > Appearance > (under Advanced) Hardware acceleration) and restart Obsidian.

  • If the search response improves sufficiently, then re-enable your plugins to see if it’s still solid. If trouble returns, then a plugin or theme could also be causing it. Debug which one.
  • If the search response improves but not sufficiently, then it could be a system limitation.
