When creating a new folder, use the current note location as a base

Once you’ve done the above, delete everything above this line.

I feel that folders should be created inside the “current folder.” Since Obsidian does not let you navigate to a folder, this would be the folder of the currently selected note.

It is very cumbersome to create hierarchical folders when every new folder is created in /

I have the preference “Default location for new notes” set to “Same as current note” and I feel that new folders could also respect this preference.

This is one of the little “rough edges” in the Obsidian UX that might seem fussy and detail-oriented but I feel it will make a usability difference for end users.

There are some very old posts about this idea with solutions involving plugins and the like. I feel this is low-level enough to warrant treatment by core Obsidian. I understand if I am mistaken about this. Thank you for reading and considering my suggestion.

Steps to reproduce

Navigate to a note inside a subfolder.
Press the “New folder” button in the toolbar.
It is not created inside the same folder.

Additional information

You can right-click on a folder, and from there “New folder” will create underneath that folder.

If you are creating a large hierarchy you can also use your OS file manager of choice.

I’m going to move this to Feature Requests, because I assume WhiteNoise will close this on you, since bugs are meant to report problems, not wishes.

And I’ll rename the title from “use the current folder as a base” to “use the current note location as a base”.
