VPN interfering with/slowing down Obsidian

What I’m trying to do

I use obsidian as a tool at work, however when I connect using my workplaces secure VPN obsidian slows down to the point of being unusable. The internet connection is fine, I am able to do everything else normally, only Obsidian is effected like this. I suspect somehow it is somehow attempting to access local files through the VPN, or the VPN is interfering some other way, but I have exhausted my skill set to diagnose the issue.

Things I have tried

The result was that Function Call was 91.7% of the total time.

  • Turning off sync
  • Turning off all community and apps and putting into restriced mode
  • Testing internet speed with and without VPN (it is slower but not enough for this impact)
I have ensured the vault is stored in local storage and not cloud, I thought VPN may have slowed the connection if it was through internet.
  • I have watched my pc peformance during these frozen/lagging moments in task manager and it doesn’t seem to register Obsidian using any significantly increased resources.

vpns can really mess with certain apps, especially ones like obsidian that rely heavily on file access and local resources.

Well, the VPN routes everything through its secure channels, which most likely ends up slowing stuff down way more than expected.

If turning off the VPN isn’t an option, you could try switching to a secure proxy instead. A proxy doesn’t usually interfere with local files the same way, so you’d likely get the security without the lag.

thank you for your advice. It helped me to figure out what’s really going on
