Vim mode: how to get from visual mode to insert mode

For example I need to enclose several words in backticks (`)

I press vwww to select words.
The I need to go to insert mode with preserved selection and then press ` key to enclose words with backticks (markdown inline code).

So how to get from visual mode to insert mode? Selection must be preserved
