I have tried all the suggestions in this thread - including most recently user davidolrik’s CSS snippet - but without solving the problem.
But earlier today, something happened. MAKE.md was updated (a major one it seemed from the update note), and, lo and behold, now everything looks very nice and the way it used to before the extended spacing appeared. The problem seems to have been solved.
