Steps to reproduce
- In the Vault Manager, choose “Open folder as vault.”
- Choose a folder on an external drive.
- Once the new vault opens, close the vault.
- Eject or unmount the external drive that the new vault is on.
- Close and exit the Obsidian application.
- Open the Obsidian application.
- Mount the external drive with the vault stored on it.
- Within Obsidian > File > Open recent, select the vault and it does NOT open.
- In addition, the vault is no longer listed in the Vault Manager, but remains in the “Open recent” list.
Did you follow the troubleshooting guide? Yes
Expected result
I expect Obsidian to remember the vault, regardless of whether the vault is available when Obsidian opens.
Actual result
The vault is not available in the Vault Manager and will not open when click in the list of recent vaults under the File menu.

Additional information
It appears that when Obsidian opens, and the vault is not available on the external drive, the vault’s config/identification is removed from Obsidian, while still remaining in the recent menu. If the external drive is mounted and the vault files are available when Obsidian opens after the first time quitting, this does not happen. But, the first time Obsidian opens and the external drive is not available, the vault is forgotten.
