Vaults, iCloud syncing and new notes

What I’m trying to do

Have my notes synced in the Apple iCloud sandbox. Two computers and an iPhone

Things I have tried

I created a Vault and anything in it gets synced. But when I create a new note it is outside the Vault and doesn’t get synced. I’m not going to remember to move it into the Vault.
I read the guidelines and some posts on the subject of Vaults and decided to keep try to keep it simple and avoid Vaults, but here’s what I ended up with. Showing a path to a note: /Library/Mobile Documents/iCloud~md~obsidian/Documents/Obsidian Vault-Main/Obsidian notes/Implementation of Obsidian.md. I seem to have some setting wrong:

I may have looked into Obsidian sync, but since I’m in the Apple iCloud world that should be enough.
How can I simplify this? Meaning new Notes sync.

Can’t see how to edit my original post. The notes sync between my two computers and I see them outside the Vault which would be fine except I don’t see those notes on my iPhone. I only see Notes in the Vault. The notes outside of the Vault are on my phone as I can see them via the Files app.

Maybe I should have titled my post “How to set up the simplest syncing on iCloud.” My not understanding how Obsidian and its Vaults work.

For this (the warning in the screenshot), disable Settings > Core plugins > Sync as you aren’t using Obsidian Sync. The Sync core plugin won’t be listed Core plugins list and you won’t see that screen anymore.

How far did you get with the steps here?

Maybe a screenshot or two of vault structure in iCloud Drive from the Finder could help here (try to remove any personal information from the pic).

Also, what’s the vault name? In the lower-left sidebar in Obsidian on macOS.

@ariehen Thank you. I changed the setting as you suggested.

And checked the following setting.

The Test of new file.md` is to test where it shows up. That is the default for Cmd-N and any files outside the Vault aren't seen in iOS. At least I don't know how to do it.

I relaunched Obsidian and changed settings on both computers.

Also just created a new file on iOS and it does show up in the Vault. But on MacOS, any new files are by default outside the Vault.

Thank you for your help.

Okay, some more clues! Based on this pic

the wrong folder is still opened as a vault (to use iCloud Drive with mobile devices properly). That should show Obsidian Vault-Main.

You’ll need to follow the steps from step 4 in the linked topic; I’ll repost them here (starting from what needs doing):

  1. Enable show hidden files/folders in the Finder.

  2. Drag attachments, all those .md files, and the .obsidian settings folder into Obsidian Vault-Main.

  3. Choose Manage vaults… from the Sandbox vault or your currently open vault.

  4. In the vault picker screen, Open folder as vault → Open and point the Finder at the Obsidian Vault-Main folder.

You can close the vault called Documents; you won’t use it anymore and we can remove it from the vault list later.
