Hi everyone,

Vault Pet is a community plugin that turns writing into a small, cozy game.
A pixel cat lives along the bottom of your workspace, pulls out a tiny laptop
and types along with you, and grows from the words you add to your notes.

New characters, links, new notes and writing sessions become XP and coins.
Only real new writing counts: deleting and retyping, undo, or pasting large
chunks earns nothing, and notes written before you installed don’t count.

What there is to do:

  • Company: it types while you type, raises a ! when a new note stays
blank, and curls up to sleep when you’ve been away.
  • Care: meal reminders, a stretch break after two hours of writing, and
a nudge when it gets too late.
  • Collecting: 264 costumes, 76 motions, 30 toys and mini-games, 17 fur
    colours and a treasure workshop.
  • Daily quests and 161 badges, including ones for using Obsidian itself:
tags, tasks, callouts, embeds, canvases and daily notes.
  • Neighbour cats drop by every couple of hours to trade treasures.
  • Stats: a weekday × hour heatmap of when you write, and a show-off card
you can save as an image.

Privacy: notes are only read, never stored or sent anywhere. The plugin makes
no network requests, and paths in its data file are stored as hashes.

English and 한국어. Desktop only.

Feedback is very welcome. I’d especially like to hear whether it actually
gets you writing more, and what your cat ends up wearing.

Update: 1.2.3 and 1.2.4 are out.

  • New ribbon icon: a single-colour pixel cat face that sits quietly next to Obsidian’s own icons and follows your theme.
  • Fairer counting: pasted or dropped text no longer earns XP or coins, and restoring a deleted note (from the trash, a sync or git) doesn’t earn the same text twice.
  • Shortcuts: Obsidian shortcuts (Ctrl/Cmd+P, O, W…) work again after clicking inside the cat’s house.
  • Lighter: the cat and the house stop animating while you can’t see them.
  • Fixes for the bubble toy/motion mix-up, fullness after long breaks, dropping the cat, and the house going blank when its tab is moved to another pane.

Thanks to everyone who tried it, and please keep the feedback coming.

Update: 1.3.0 is out, the biggest one so far.

  • Stars after Lv.80. Levels now stop at 80, and every 2,000 XP after that becomes a star. Stars buy 56 endgame costumes and 3 animated fur colors in a new star shop. Before Lv.80 it works as a showcase of what’s ahead.
  • 13 ear shapes, free from the start.
  • Today’s craving. Your cat asks for one meal and one snack each day, and feeding those gives you half the price back. The energy gauge is gone: a full cat simply finds treasures and gets visitors more often.
  • Your own share card. This month, last month or all time, up to six writing stats, four colors, post or story size.
  • House themes: Cream, Cocoa, Mint milk, Sakura, Milk choco, or Auto, which follows your Obsidian theme.
  • Quieter bubbles. Small talk waits for a pause in your writing, at most once an hour, and anything you missed is in Today’s news.
  • Also a treasure exchange, streak gifts, a daily question and a low power mode.

Your cat, coins and costumes carry over as they are. Full notes: Release 1.3.0 · elliott-json-park/obsidian-vault-pet · GitHub

Thanks for all the feedback so far. I’d love to see what your cat is wearing.

Update: 1.3.2 is out.

  • Fixed: since 1.3.0 the cat could keep typing long after you stopped writing. It now puts the laptop away about 20 seconds after you stop, like before.
