Unable to maximize on Mac with hidden window frame

Obsidian is unable to resize on Mac, since a recent release (v0.16.x).
Looks like the window’s title bar is not capturing the double-click event.

Steps to reproduce

  • Use Mac, start Obsidian
  • Double-click the window’s title bar

Expected result

  • The window should resize / maximize / zoom

Actual result

  • Nothing happens. The window is not resized.

Additional information

Happens since Obsidian v.0.16.x.
Can’t remember the exact minor version, but I remember v.0.15.x working properly (double click on title bar did maximize/resize).

I’ve tried disabling all plugins, and launching a “Sandbox vault”, still didn’t work.

All other Mac apps (in example, Chrome) are working as expected.

Mac allows to configure a different option (Settings > Dock > “Double-click a window’s title bar to…”)
image
I’ve set it to “Minimize”, but still didn’t work. So I guess it’s not about “maximize”, but about capturing the double-click.

Could be related to Clicking twice on the "back" button maximises the window

I experience this too. Double clicking the title bar does nothing. (I don’t know if it used to work. I never Zoom by clicking on title bars.) I know there are many native MacOS things that have had issues in Obsidian over the years.

Workarounds in the meantime:

  • hold alt and click the green button to maximize
  • Use a window snapper such as Divvy or Hammerspoon (many others) to resize windows quickly with hotkeys
  • You can likely map an app-specific hotkey to “Zoom”.

Your installer is very out of date. You need to download the latest 0.15.9 installer from the website and reinstall. The auto-installer can’t auto-update past certain major updates, and your app is out of date.

This is unrelated to your issue. It’s just something you really need to do.

“Alt+Click on green button” is a good work-around, thanks!

Didn’t know about the auto-installer, will do it.

only happens with hidden window frame on mac

Confirmed, depends on Settings > Appearance > Window frame style:

  • Hidden (default): does not work
  • Obsidian frame: works
  • Native frame: works

This is still happening for me on 0.16.5 with installer version 0.15.9. Can’t double-click titlebar to maximize in ‘Hidden’ mode.

This is not going to get fixed. If you need this, use the other two modes.

Thanks for the confirmation.

It’s understandable (minor impact), but inconsistent (Chrome, with hidden window frame, is double-clickable) by default (and most users won’t find the work-around).

Open Obsidian. There is no Window/Zoom option as in almost every other macOS app. Double clicking on the titlebar doesn’t zoom the window either.

zoom? you mean maximize the window? can’t you use the green button?

I think maximize also work in native and obsidian frame.

change of plans. This will be fixed. No ETAs.

Just to answer that question, yeah that’s right. In MacOS, the command is called Window → Zoom. Same thing as maximize.

But by default clicking the green button fullscreens an app, hiding all surrounding UI, and moves the app to a separate virtual desktop. option-click “Zooms” or Maximizes to the size of the screen.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open Obsidian in macOS.
  2. Double click empty area in the title bar.

Expected result

Obsidian should minimize.

Actual result

Nothing happens.

Additional information

In the screenshot below, I’ve outlined the areas in red that I’d expect to be able to double-click to minimize:

It would be nice for this to work so it’s similar to other macOS apps – it’s kind of jolting when you try to do it and it doesn’t work. Additionally, I’m pretty sure this used to work before version 1.0.0, so my guess is that the tab functionality got rid of it. But moving the window by clicking and dragging in those areas still works, so I would expect double-clicking to minimize to work also.

Being worked on, I believe …

Oops, I missed this existing issue since I forgot that what happens on double-click is configurable in the OS. Thanks.

Looking forward to a fix!
