Hello, I have been trying to find a permanent home after Evernote. I spent some time getting syncthing working to sync from MacBook to iPhone. Sync is working great and I love the editor and was polishing up my workflow before I brought in all my work files.
However, when I put a bunch of my work notes into Obsidian (around 800gb and 2400 files) with “Detect all file extensions” option checked so that I could reference regular files in notes…the mobile app freezes and crashes. It is completely unusable. I do have a fair number of .pages documents that I need to reference by linking in notes.
What are users doing with larger vaults? I have found mentioned a couple of times that other users have trouble with mobile when they have large vaults. Is there some workaround? This pretty much makes it unusable in my use case because I need to have a mobile copy of my notes. This is my biggest roadblock right now.
I don’t think this is a sync issue, because syncthing just syncs the folder independent of Obsidian.
I have tried turning off plugins, but that doesn’t seem to fix it.
Can I ask you to provide a list of your plugins, mate? (Command palette > Show Debug info)
Dataview and others doing indexing can hurt, for instance.
In the meantime, you can use e.g. Taio, MWeb, Textastic apps if you want to try. All can add an Obsidian vault as their own external folder for you to work with.
I had tried a bunch of things like turning off plugins and creating a separate config file and having “detect all file extensions” turned off on mobile, but that didn’t seem to work for some reason.
So I went back and turned off almost all plugins again. But then I noticed they weren’t turning off on mobile. I made sure there was only one config file .obsidian and that both profiles were set to use it. I can’t manage anything on mobile hardly because the app crashes so frequently, so I turned everything off on MacBook and got it all synced. However, my the plugins would not turn off on mobile. Even after making sure they were using the same config file and syncing multiple times. I shut the app down and restarted it. Closed that vault and reopened it…the plugins were always on.
So…I created a new vault. Copied only my files and folders. And synced that one…and presto! It’s working with core plugins on and but no community plugins. Mobile app seems fine even with “detect all file extensions” selected.
So maybe something was just messed up? It seems really weird that the settings weren’t syncing so maybe I messed something up when I was trying to fix it earlier by running two config files. I guess now I’ll add community plugins carefully and one at a time and see if I run into a problem…but the issue is resolved for now and so I wanted to give an update.
