Three entire vaults gone pls help

I synced my onedrive to this laptop to use Word for something then I left it for a few hours after writing in obsidian continuously, then a few hours later I came back and all three of my completely saved and full vaults are gone, instead replaced with a file called “obsidian.” and a name that aligns with my old (now deleted) vaults.

What I’m trying to do

I am trying to get back my three missing vaults that have days worth of work on that I need for school

Things I have tried

I’ve tried to restart my laptop but nothing’s worked, the file is nowhere on my computer and I cannot find anything except for a vault titled “obsidian.” and it has the sub name of my old vault that it deleted.

You are probably going to have to log in to your OneDrive account and see if you can restore the files from there.

You have to really be careful with these cloud tools. They have settings where they try to not store the files fully on your computer to automatically save space. In OneDrive, you have to make sure to use “Always keep on this device”. Maybe that is what happened.

Make sure you don’t rely on cloud tools as your only backup. Make safe backup copies of your work on a regular basis. I hope you can restore your files!

And also be careful if you have files open at the same time on both devices in any kind of app, not just Obsidian.

Thank you for the solution I spent about 20 minuets going through my onedrive and found all three missing vaults! You’re a life saver and a grade saver too! Thx you!

You’re welcome. I’m a student too, and OneDrive has bitten me more than once. Be careful and always back up important work! (and again, cloud tools aren’t full backups!)

Here is info on how to backup, which should get you going pretty quickly:
