Hi everyone,
I’d like to propose a plugin idea and share a working proof of concept: native .textbundle and .textpack support for Obsidian.
Edit:
Preview:
The idea: I archive a lot of things in TextBundle format. There’s currently no way to open or edit TextBundles directly in Obsidian, which means switching to another app whenever I want to work with them.
Why I’m posting this as an idea, not a finished plugin: I work in software professionally (backend and infrastructure), so I’m comfortable writing code, but the Obsidian plugin API, CodeMirror extensions, and internals are a different domain from what I do every day. So I vibecoded a proof of concept to validate that this is technically feasible, but I wouldn’t trust myself to implement it to community plugin standards.
The only open problem: Properties aren’t indexed by Obsidian’s metadata cache. The root cause is that Obsidian doesn’t treat files inside a .textbundle as vault files. But what works is even pasting images inside the document.
If you work on Obsidian plugins and this seems like a worthwhile addition to the ecosystem, I’d genuinely welcome someone taking this further.
I can’t include links here, but just search GitHub, Bastian Kuhn, obsidian-textbundle for the source code. Will crosspost also on Reddit :).
