Use case or problem
// Excuse the terseness of this post but I’ve had this issue top of mind for a while and I’m writing it up while fireworks prevent me from sleeping on July 4th
The right use of folders or tags as an organizing structure in Obsidian feels impossible today due to the constraining nature of tags. Folders list files in a simple and familiar layout that allows them to be clicked one by one and then easily shift to another Folder. Tags need to be individually searched for or clicked on in the tags
view, which hops over to the search functionality. It’s a much higher sense of friction as you navigate, requiring 2-3 clicks for every one for folders.
Proposed solution
I would like to see the Tags
view “fixed” by aligning it to the Files view for familiarity and to reduce the friction of file-to-file navigation across tags.
There is the challenge of a single file with multiple tags, which could be addressed by:
- First, accepting that if we use multiple tags, it will be listed multiple times – leads to better tag management in the end
- Next, adding a symbol to represent multiple tags so users realize it’s in multiple places
Current workaround (optional)
I don’t use tags for meaningful sorting in the interim. They are only for dataview queries.
