Switching between files often produces pinwheel delay

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open a set of files in different tabs
  2. Drag one of the tabs below to create a separate pane.
  3. When moving between tabs, or panes either by selecting with mouse or using key commands. I will experience intermittent pinwheel (rainbow spinning indicator) delays which can last from 4 to 10 seconds.

This does not appear to be an issue in the sandbox vault
I am seeing this issue in my personal vault

  • I am running the default Theme
  • have set restricted mode (no plugins running)
  • and turned off the few CSS snippets I was running in my vault

Expected result

I would expect to be able to switch files quickly and begin typing without this delay

Actual result

Switching between tabs or panes, works fine until it does not (roughly every 3rd or 4th file switch). At which point the pinwheel will show and all input will be delayed until whatever is blocking is resolved. This is ~5 seconds.

Additional information

Note that I am using iCloud to store and sync my vault between devices.
“Optimize Mac Storage” is set but I am using the new “Keep Downloaded” feature on this vault folder.

If you make a copy of your vault to another location on local disk, does it still happen in this duplicate vault?

I duplicated this vault (741MB) into my Downloads folder (local to the laptop) and I am unable reproduce the delay.

Hopefully this is a temporary side effect of the MacOS15 beta build profiling. I will file a bug with Apple against this new “Keep Downloaded” feature.

The use case is important as “Optimized Mac Storage” is necessary due to space constraints but obviously some data needs to be kept consistent locally. Thanks for looking at this and the duplicate suggestion.
