Support managed iCloud Drive as a vault location on iOS

Use case or problem

Users who for work for organizations who have provided them with BYOD management for their iOS devices can make use of a separate iCloud Drive in addition to their personal iCloud Drive (this enrollment method is called account driven enrollment.) I would like to see this ‘work’ iCloud Drive available as a storage location when creating a new vault. Doing so allows many users of Obsidian users working in corporate environments to stay within the rules of storing data with a cloud provider while also enjoying the benefits of sync.

Proposed solution

When creating a new vault and when selecting iCloud, allow the user to choose between their personal iCloud Drive or managed iCloud Drive (if one has been set up.)

Current workaround (optional)

Current workarounds are cumbersome and brittle. They involve creating custom automations to transfer content between vaults or between the Apple notes app and Obsidian.

I also need this yes

Steps to reproduce

  • Two iCloud accounts configured (primary/personal, and then Managed Apple Account for work)
  • Obsidian directory exists in base folder of managed iCloud Drive account, but not primary
  • Attempt to setup Obsidian on iPadOS – folder cannot be found

Did you follow the troubleshooting guide? [Y/N]

Yes

Expected result

Obsidian should be able to recognize a secondary iCloud accounts drive, or provide the ability to specify the path

Actual result

Obsidian states no folder is found in iCloud Drive (which is true of my primary/personal account). Vaults created on the device save to my primary iCloud Drive.

Additional information

I don’t know if this is specific to my configuration of Regular Apple Account + Managed Apple Account, or if this would happen with two iCloud accounts signed in.

thanks, I’ll try to double check

+1 on this. It would be really nice to have the option to use a work managed iCloud Drive.

Should this be a feature request?
