Storage and Remembrance of TAGs in Obsidian

What I’m trying to do

Hello all,
I am currently reorganizing the TAGs I am using. Typing a hashsign in the editor brings up a list with TAGs I have been using before. That’s fine. What I would like to know is:

  1. Does Obsidian remember TAGs even if they are no longer in use in the respective vault?

  2. Is there an “official way” of cleaning up TAGs?

  3. Where are these TAGs stored? Is this a place (file) I could edit maunally?

  1. No. If all instances of a tag is removed, it no longer shows up in the autosuggestion.
  2. Not necessary because of 1.
  3. It’s not stored anywhere in the filesystem.
