Have a md link to that file with an escaped (bracketed) URL:

Now when you renaming the file the resulting link will be gibberish. For example when renaming John 17.1-26 - The Prayer of Jesus to John 17. The md link gets updated to the following:
[John 17:22](John%2017.md#^c17v22 17.1-26 - The Prayer of Jesus#^c17v22>)
