Remember navigation history when closing Obsidian or switching workspace layouts

Navigation history is lost upon closing Obsidian or switching workspace layouts

I’ve been using Obsidian almost daily for over a year now, and saved workspace layouts is one of my favorite features, both the passive feature of preserving / restoring the active workspace layout upon closing/reopening Obsidian as well as the managed feature of saving / loading workspace layouts. However, one property that is currently not included (i.e., not preserved or saved) as part of workspace layouts is the navigation history for each tab.

When editing a note, I will often think of something relevant to another note, so I will navigate to that other note and edit it as well. Then from that note, I may think of something relevant to yet another note and edit that one, too. And so on. Then I may navigate back and forth between all those notes.

Navigation history is really helpful for recalling a train of thought between ideas / notes, but that history is lost upon closing Obsidian or upon switching workspace layouts.

Proposed solution

Request: Include navigation history for each tab as a property of workspace layouts

Forgot to mention: Chrome browser is an example of an existing app that has implemented this feature of preserving navigation history for each tab

The Pane Relief plugin already does this in the desktop app, but unfortunately it doesn’t support the mobile app.

It would be great to see Obsidian include this by default in every version of the app. It’s an essential feature imo.

I’d especially appreciate this on mobile, where app reloads forced by the OS are common. It’s annoying to open the app and find the path back has disappeared.

I changed the thread title to focus on the desired behavior instead of the underlying implementation (was “Include navigation history for each tab as a property of workspace layouts”).
