**Somewhere on your reMarkable is the best idea you had this month.**

You can even picture it: the line through the paragraph that had to go, the circle around the one phrase worth keeping, the objection scrawled in the margin. Paper does that — it slows the text down until you can hear yourself think.

Then you are back at your desk, and your vault has never heard of any of it. The tablet keeps your reading; your vault keeps your writing; the two never meet. So you retype the good bits, or you tell yourself you will, or you quietly stop marking things up at all.

That is why I built **reMarkable Round-Trip** : write in your vault, review on the tablet, and get your remarks back **in the note they came from** — as markdown you can actually edit and refine.

## What comes back

The plugin typesets the page itself, so it knows where every word sits. No OCR, no AI necessary, the shape and position of a stroke say what it did and which words it points at.

| You draw | Your vault gets |
| --- | --- |
| A line through words | ` ~~struck through~~ ` |
| A line under words | underlined |
| A loop around a phrase | **bold** (configurable) |
| A bar in the margin | those lines as a `>` quote |
| The text highlighter | `<mark>` in the colour you used |
| Handwriting, arrows, anything else | a cropped image, under the line it was written against |
| A page you added on the tablet | the whole page, placed after the text it follows |

It lands as an **annotated copy of your note** in a companion note by default, so your source stays untouched. Your own text, formatting intact, marks worked in where you drew them. Re-imports replace only the plugin’s own block. What a mark _means_ is configurable: circle = bold for example, if that is your convention. See the settings for options.

## The outgoing half

Send a note or folder from the command palette or a right-click. Wikilinks flatten to readable text, embeds resolve inline, callouts become titled quotes. Typeset as an e-ink friendly PDF (or EPUB for pure reading), your folder structure mirrored on the device, re-sending replaces the old copy. Optional watch folder. Desktop and mobile.

Every note gets a stable `remarkable-id` — that id, not the file path, is how annotations find their way home, so move and rename freely.

## Privacy

Your notes travel between Obsidian and the endpoint _you_ configure — the official reMarkable cloud (one-time pairing code) or your own [rmfakecloud ( [rmfakecloud](https://ddvk.github.io/rmfakecloud/) ). No other services, no telemetry, GPL v3 licensed.

## Honest limitations

Newly in the community directory, so expect rough edges and fast fixes. Images render as placeholders in the PDF; standard PDF fonts (full Latin-1, other scripts get ASCII fallbacks); handwriting comes back as an image, not text. Reading handwriting is a different problem, and guessing would be worse than showing you what you wrote. The stroke reader is written against an undocumented format; the import report says so when a page could not be read, and that report has been the beta’s best debugging tool.

## Try it

1. _Settings → Community plugins → Browse_ → search **reMarkable Round-Trip**
([direct link](https://obsidian.md/plugins?id=remarkable-round-trip)).
2. Pair with a one-time code from
[my.remarkable.com/device/browser/connect](https://my.remarkable.com/device/browser/connect).
3. Right-click a note → _Send to reMarkable_. Mark it up. Run _Import annotations from reMarkable_.

This is a first version, built because I needed it. If you know what it should do next: let me know — here or on [GitHub](https://github.com/maxonamission/obsidian-remarkable-round-trip/issues).
