I searched, and didn’t see a relevant thread, but it’s possible there is one and it’s just called something else.
If I have an alias assigned to one note and I want to move it to another note, how will it behave/is there a way to do it without breaking all the links?
I assume if I just delete the alias from the first note, I’ll lose the links. Can I assign the same alias to a second note, and then remove it from the first?
This won’t happen (AFAIK) . An alias in a link is just an alternative display text for the link…
You can perfectly create a link to a note displaying an alias without having said alias added to the aliases key in the note you’re trying to link to ().
E.g.: Let’s say I have Note A and in that note I add a link to Note B such as:
[[Note B|Alias]]
Whether Note B have an aliases key in Properties or not, whether Alias is listed as value for a potential aliases key or not the link will work …
Obsidian doesn’t add/assign, automatically, aliases to notes (it’s at the user’s discretion). Although there are probably plugins which can help with that …
That said, by adding an aliases key to Properties and keeping track of aliases for a note in there, it can help you to spot “unlinked mentions” across your vault and create new links between notes (See here).
You can assign the same alias to mutiple files if you like to do that, and as @Pch explained nothing is happening with links based originally by an alias if you change the aliases lists.
If you change the name of the original note normal rules apply, indifferent to whether the link uses an display text or not in the link it changes.
