Problems, positives and negatives of obsidian

Pros

  • It has many plugins for various features.
  • It is fully modifiable, except for a few things.
  • It is a little easier to use than Notion, but on mobile both are (0%) intuitive, which is extremely frustrating.
  • I found the minimalist theme available very pleasant.

Cons

  • It is paid in dollars, it is not cheap and as far as I saw it does not have Real as a payment method, which makes it impossible for me to use it on mobile (where it is more viable to put my routines and tasks) and $10 for us Brazilians for 1GB of storage is a crime.
  • It takes a long time to use like Notion.
  • It is not easy to increase the font of a word or letter.
  • A lot of important information, such as that of the plugins, is in English (it would be much more inclusive and better if there was an optional automatic translation in Obsidian itself).
  • Behind the AI trends.
  • There are no functional Markdown tools that are more efficient when writing, and you have to memorize everything to be able to use it (the plugins are practically decorations).
  • The support pages usually do not have 100% of the content in Portuguese, whereas all the necessary information appears in English and this makes no sense at all.
  • Some extra tools such as drawing should be more widespread in the application, because if I have to draw I would have to draw in Paint and save it as an image to import it into Obsidian, and the “Ink” plugin is terrible because it simply does not stop crashing and does not have any tools inside it. The only positive point was that it identified the pressure of my pen on the Wacom by One digital tablet.

You forgot 2 main Pros:

  • Local files
  • md format - non-propitiatory format is a must if you don’t want your data to be locked into the app, md has additional upside of any text editor being able to open and edit them.

As for Cons:

  • plenty of free alternatives to sync, so unless you’re a commercial entity, it is available entirely for free, making the cost issue move among Pros
  • AI tools should never, ever make it into core Obsidian. There’s plenty of plugins if you want them, but not hopping on the AI hype train is a humongous plus in my book. It means, among other things, the developers have a vision for their software, rather than jumping around with marketing trends to increase sales
  • limited formatting options is the price of sticking to md format. I expect long-term development goals will include making core features for easier CSS management to style the notes, but for now I’m content with implementing snippets others graciously provide. Inserting html is also as option, but it defeats the purpose of having easily readable plain text notes, so I personally avoid it.
