Problematic Obsidian intervening while writing a note - HowTo solve / debug?

Hi,
Just very recently I encounter this unbelievable annoying behaviour:

  • You’re typing a note
  • While you’re typing, say a couple of lines in, suddenly text disappears, while briefly some message pops up (too fast to retain) about changes that happen externally and merging??

I did some searching on the web:

  • what is specific to me: today I also started working in obsidian on a windows machine (other machines mostly macos)
  • I found a hint to close obsidian on the iPhone

This has never happened to me before.
In the mean time I’v installed LogStraVaganza to see if I can track down what’s happening.

Curious about other users experiences.

This is unbearable! - Obsidian becomes totally unworkable due to this.
Just installed logstravaganza, then continued to work on my note:
Immediately the sync error thing kicked in. - see attached image

How to stop this?

Do you sync your vault(s) across device(s) through iCloud ?

The only few times this happens to me was either because the vault wasn’t fully downloaded from iCloud on my old MBP (and Obsidian needs files to be local to work properly) or because iCloud decided to evict a note or another for some reasons :woman_shrugging:

Now, if you indeed sync your vault(s) through iCloud on a device running on Windows, this is generally discouraged, per Obsidian’s documentation :

iCloud can be used to sync vaults between iOS and macOS. However, iCloud Drive on Windows may lead to file duplication or corruption.

If you don’t use iCloud to sync your vault(s) across devices  , I would still check the settings of the sync service you chose to make sure your notes are locally available…

I thought about iCloud on the Windows machine. Since this is a quite old windows computer that I only marginally use for some very specific tasks, but also since this machine is on 24/24h I need to rethink why the iCloud app is even there.

I don’t remember, but there was a time that there was Safari for windows, not sure if that had to do with it, or that it was just to use the storage space on iCloud, or sync Bookmarks.

Anyway, for the time being I have disabled iCloud from auto-starting on the window machine.

I started using Obsidian on this windows machine in order to be able to easily take notes of config things and such that are then later on available in Obsidian on all of my machines.

What struck me as really odd, is that it occured on notes that are “new” on the mac and non-existing on the windows machine. I would expect such an issue to arise when a specific note is open on two machines at the same time, but that was not the case.

It hasn’t happened anymore.
Will post back if it happens again.

Thanks for helping out!
