Pipe "|" key not working as expected when creating a link (the way # and ^ do)

Not sure if this is a bug or I’m just missing something, but I cannot for the life of me get the link alias shortcut key aka | to work when I’m creating a link. What I’m doing:

  1. Typing [[cats to get a dropdown of possible matching notes in the vault ie. cats are cool, cats are furry, my all-time favorite cats, cat jokes, etc
  2. Using the cursor keys to highlight the note I want to link to (let’s say cat jokes)
  3. Pressing | (shift backslahs) to select the note and create the link and start typing alias text

I’m expecting to get the text [[cat jokes|]] in the note with the cursor sitting just after the pipe, ready for me to type an alias for the link but what I actually get is:

Not very useful; the note I want to link to isn’t there and anything further just makes it worse. I’m expecting it to work the same as the # and ^ keys, but it isn’t.

I can’t find a bug report on this, so I’m expecting that I’m missing something/doing something silly. Who would like to set me straight?

If I’m understanding correctly, I think you want to type [[cats, use the up/down arrow keys to find the note you want to link to then Tab to complete the auto-suggestion. Then type |, now enter your link/display text and right arrow twice to get out of the link then Enter

See, I knew I was missing something - thank you!

Still confused by the hint text at the bottom of the dropdown - # and ^ are there and work exactly as the hint suggests, but we need an extra Tab for the alias? That feels a bit weird and inconsistent to me and has led to a lot of confusion (for me at least). Thank you again for giving me a way past it

Just FYI, no need for right arrow twice and Enter. Using Tab again gets you out of the link, which gives you a much smoother writing experience.
