The core plugin Page preview
lets us view different notes in a small preview window when hovering a link (ctrl+hover
in editor mode).
I would be very neat to have that feature also for inline & regular footnotes!
Use case or problem
Currently, in order to find out what hides behind a footnote, one has to click on the footnote itself and jump to the end of the document. This becomes quite tedious and breaks the reading flow. If the footnote “pops” up when hovering over it would make the reading experience much nicer!
Proposed solution
Basically identical functionality as page preview for linked notes:
Inline footnotes:
For an inline footnote: ^[this is a footnote]
Preview mode: hover
over [1] shows the preview box for the footnote
Editor mode: Functionality not needed here, because the text of the footnote is already displayed under the cursor!
Regular footnotes:
For regular footnotes like:
[^fn2]
[^fn2]: this is another footnote
Preview mode: hover
over [2] shows the preview box for the footnote
Editor mode: ctrl+hover
over [^fn2]
shows the preview box for the footnote
