Open new tabs next to current (instead of at the far right)

What I’m trying to do

I’m accustomed to opening new tabs (with ctrl-t) next to the current tab (like in Firefox). But there’s no option in Obsidian to change its behavior from opening new tabs at the end of all tabs to just next to the current tab.

Things I have tried

This post asked EXACTLY the same thing, but there seemed to be no solution for 3 whole years since then…

… Or, is it? Is there somewhere out there a community plugin that does this?

There is this plugin

Although it seems that Ctrl+T behaves the same after using this plugin. You can contact the developer if you want new features.

Yes indeed I’ve already tried this. But it only controls the new tab placement when you click on the file list in the left sidebar (neither when you click on the + sign in the tab bar nor when you press ctrl-T) — I don’t know if it’s by design or the developper simply forgot this (or maybe it once worked but became broken after some updates etc.) but I will open an issue.

Meanwhile, is there any other plugin that does this? It’s hard to believe that this basic need has never been fulfilled for soooo long time.

I think your request is quite specific because you can avoid opening new tabs and just open files instead. But at least you can contact various developers that have made custom new tab page. You could ask user option for new tab placement (unless already implemented).

First of all, thanks for your suggestions.

And you’re right! I could just open files instead!

Actually my primary concern was that when I press Ctrl-O to open a file, the current tab navigates to that file, so that I needed to Ctrl-T new tab first and Ctrl-O after.

But I was so stereotyped to think that like in so many editors or browsers, Ctrl-O is always reserved for opening a file in the current tab or window with no exception, whick made me think that Open Tab Settings only works when I click on the file list in the left sidebar and I didn’t even test Ctrl-O!!

Now that I can just Ctrl-O open a file next to the current tab, I don’t need to change new tab placement of Ctrl-T.

But meanwhile it now feels wierd that even clicking a link inside the current tab results in new tabs (unless I change the Ctrl-click behavior to opening in same tab, but that feels wierd too)…

Not sure if Open Tab Settings is helpful really to you but you can use Quick Switcher ++. Note that you have to rebind Ctrl+O to “quick switcher++: open in standard mode”. Quick Switcher++ has various useful modes like symbols mode, bookmarks mode and editor mode. Obviously you need to use keyboard shortcuts to use them effectively.

You can use the default built-in quick switcher to open in new tabs by pressing Ctrl+Enter. Quick Switcher++ gives two things to this: you don’t need to press Ctrl and already open files are refocused (unless you press Ctrl).
