Is there a way to work with obsidian on a pc using only a keyboard? Specifically, with directories and notes in the manager?
There are many, many customizable keyboard shortcuts and commands through the command pallet.
And a few plugins that can help with automation and macros.
Is there something specific you can’t figure out how to do via keyboard?
On mac you may use
Work like with Explorer or Norton, MC, Total Commanders. Always one focused element with visual decoration. Move focus by arrows. Plus move files and dirs by shift+arrows (left arrow in tree, right arrow down in tree, change position in list of siblings by up and down arrows), insert to make new, del to delete an other like this. To make work with files faster.
i have windows 11
You can do this:
- run command
Files: Show file exploreror assign a keyboard shortcut for it - press down arrow key (↓)
- now you get keyboard navigation in your files
I’m not sure which keys are functional exactly in Files but at least:
- left/right ←/→ to collapse/uncollapse
- up/down ↑/↓ to navigate up/down
- enter to rename folder or file
- space to open note
- esc will exit the keyboard navigation in files
- esc also cancels renaming
- you can run
Focus on last noteto restore focus to your note
I don’t know whether Ctrl + X/C/V or Delete works
It is fix for part of problems, thank you. But other part still here. And plugins for Folder Note and Hand Sorting of siblings make unpredictable behaviour of cursor.
What is the other plugin? I tested Folder Notes and space doesn’t open folder notes. Otherwise there are no problems. If you experience problem with a plugin then you need to contact the plugin developer.
To be honest, I don’t use the Files tab much for navigation anymore (the Quick Switcher and unique note names, for the win!), but I’m still a big fan of:
You could give that a spin.
I tested the plugin. Most notably it offers \ (on US layout) or ⌥/Alt + Enter to open context menu and context menu can be navigated with typing first letters. It doesn’t offer much direct keyboard actions on items but you get rename (F2) and move (⇧F2) which cannot be reconfigured. Performing an operation loses the active file menu. Direct delete using keyboard is not possible but in default files browser you can use ⌘⌫.
