Obsidian Sync stuck in syncing loop (re-uploading the same files)

Ctrl shift i. Do you see errors in console?

Not any error

Are you sure you restarted the app after enabling restricted mode?

When I enable restricted mode from the settings, Obsidian automatically reloads itself. Now I tried restarting Obsidian after this first reload and still having the same issue.

Try to move the file that it it is stuck out of obsidian and let it sync.

When it has done, move it back to the vault.

I did try this for one of the files, while keeping Obsidian in restricted mode running all the time. So using the file explorer I moved the file out, let Obsidian sync and it detected the change.

Then moved the file back in place, also using file explorer, which was also detected by Obsidian

After this, the file bois/Robinnier faux accacia.md is no longer part of the syncing loop.

Ok, we have had a handful of cases like this. Unfortunately we do not know what’s the cause yet.

Any updates on that? I seem to have the same error today for the first time, too. My MacOS syncs fine. Also, the files from MacOS are showing up in the Sync-Log on mobile, BUT they are NOT synced. I can’t see the files on the phone. And my changes from my phone don’t get synced or uploaded.

On the status of Obisidan, sync is mostly saying “initializing”, changes dedecting., or resuming if I stop and resume. I also tried disconnecting the Vault, closing the app, etc. Didnt help. Never had that before, and I have used it for many years.

I’m having the same problem, consistently on an android phone and not once on my linux desktop. For me it loops the plugin settings files consistently.

Update on Sync Loop Issue – High CPU Usage Observed

I’ve noticed that when Obsidian gets stuck in this sync loop, it also consumes a significant amount of CPU resources.

On my system (Intel® Core™ i7-8750H @ 2.20GHz), Obsidian was consistently using around 15% CPU. Restarting in Restricted Mode (with no community plugins) didn’t change this behaviour. However, as soon as I applied the workaround—disconnecting and reconnecting Sync—the CPU load immediately dropped to 0–1%.

Additionally, I observed that files were not syncing (fetching latest changes from other main machine) on this computer before I manually stopped the previous loop (not the one I am referring to in my previous comment).

This suggests that the issue may be more severe than I initially thought.

We’ve had success with users renaming the folder that contains the files, or renaming the looping files themselves.

Have you tried this?

Thanks, I will try next time.

Note that the issue comes back frequently and there are often multiple files involved, so this would be complicated to manage on a per-file basis.

The disconnect-reconnect sync workaround appears to be more efficient to tackle it.

I had the same problem this morning, but only on one machine (my Mac Studio). My MacBook Pro and my iPhone/iPad synced fine.

For me, at least… was an illegal character in the filename. I had 2 files that constantly looped, and they both had a colon ( : ) in the file name. Renaming these 2 files seemed to fix it. Not sure why it worked on my MacBook but not my desktop, but ¯_(ツ)_/¯ .
