Obsidian on iOS can only find files in the notes folder

Hello! I’m a newbie here and want to start using Obsidian, but I encountered a problem that is blocking me:

I installed Obsidian (1.6.7) on my iPhone 14 (17.6.1). I created a new vault called “Test” in iCloud.
Then I installed Obsidian (1.6.7) on my Mac (14.5) and accessed the “Test” vault via iCloud.

I created a note called “To do” on the Mac and attached a file. The file was saved in the root folder, where the “Test” folder is located.

On both the Mac and the iPhone, the setting “Default location for new attachments” is set to “Vault folder”.

  1. Is it okay that the file on the Mac was saved in the root instead of Obsidian/Test?

Then I opened the “To do” note on my iPhone, and while the text was there, the file wasn’t found.
When I tried to attach a file on the iPhone, it was saved in the Obsidian/Test folder.

I then changed the setting “Default location for new attachments” to “In subfolder under current folder” and set “Subfolder name” to “files”.

I attached a new file on the iPhone, but it was still saved in the Obsidian/Test folder.

  1. Why did Obsidian on the iPhone save the file in the vault folder instead of the subfolder?

Next, I applied the same settings on my Mac, attached a new file there, and the file was saved in the correct folder - Obsidian/Test/files.

But the iPhone still couldn’t find the new file! I checked the files via the “Files” app, and they are there. They are downloaded and open without issues.

  1. Why can Obsidian on the iPhone find files only in the vault folder?
  1. Can you explain what you mean by “attached a file”? What kind of file? Is this a .txt file or something that you dragged into Obsidian?
  2. “saved in the root” - I think you likely opened up the wrong folder on your Mac. If your vault is “Test”, then you need to open “Test” on all the computers. Not “Obsidian”. Otherwise you have created a vault-inside-a-vault on one of your computers. This is technically OK to do, except now one of the vaults can’t access anything in the parent vault. So it isn’t something you want to do.
  3. and 3. This is the same as #1. It seems like one of your vaults is open on the wrong folder, which is why it’s saving somewhere different.

But also if you are “attaching” files instead of writing notes, it’s possible Obsidian is not searching those attachments for title or content.

Or if it is an actual note inside Obsidian, one of your vaults might be unable to look above itself into the accidental parent vault you made.

Why are you “attaching” notes? Is this intentional? Ordinarily you are going to write the notes inside Obsidian and they will be saved as .md files inside your vault. Not as files stored inside your vault.

Thank you so much! You were right; the Obsidian folder was opened on the Mac instead of Obsidian/Test . I have no idea how it happened, but it did.
Now everything works fine. Thank you!
