Obsidian "hijacks" the "play/pause" media key

Steps to reproduce

  • Open a page that contains an embedded local video
  • Play it
  • Close that page (but don’t exit obsidian)
  • Open some media player (e.g. Groove Music, Spotify), and hit the “play/pause” media key on your keyboard, you will find it doesn’t work anymore unless you exit obsidian.
(Meanwhile, “previous” and “next” key are still available.)

Expected result

The “play/pause” media key works as usual, i.e. I can control the media in other programs when obsidian loses focus.

Actual result

It doesn’t work anymore unless I exit obsidian.

Environment

  • Operating system: Windows 10 22H2 (OS Build 19045.2251)
  • Debug info: (None)

Added: Embedded iframe (e.g. YouTube video) has the same problem.

I can’t reproduce. The play/pause button flatout does not work in obsidian for me. Not for mp3, not for youtube emebeds, so it doesn’t hjack anything. Win11 22h2.

Post a screen recording of this happening in the sandbox vault.

(Well… maybe Win10 and Win11 behave differently?)

I uploaded a video, please check it:

Sorry, I can’t reproduce this.

(Several days passed and no one else reported the same problem.)

My friends and classmates can’t reproduce this either, it seems only to happen on my laptop, so it’s probably not a bug of Obsidian, this topic might be closed.

Anyway, thank you very much for your reply @WhiteNoise : )

I’ve just posted a solution on how to disable media keys in Obsidian in a related thread:

Hope this helps you out as well. If you’ve found another fix in the mean time, I’d be happy to hear about it.
