Obsidian from OneNote -> VAULTS / SYNC / SHARING questions

Hi, I wanted to say hi! I’m a huge OneNote user but have decided to move to a new platform (Obsidian). I have a couple of questions about vaults, syncing and sharing. As a side note, I’m a big Star Trek fan of TOS and others. Play STFC on S45.

VAULTS
I understand what a vault is, but is there a limit on the number of local vaults you can have? Initially I would like to keep individual vaults that mimic my OneNote Notebooks until everything get integrated into Obsidian.
Can you in the future move data from one vault to another one?

SYNC
I understand that this is only available for the paid plans. When it says maximum file size, that refers to the actual vault size or are their individual files inside the vault that get synced?

SHARING
My wife and I currently have a shared OneNote Notebook. I a firm believer in local storage but in this case we use Dropbox to share and edit that specific notebook. Can I share this new “vault?”
Does this vault need to be done via SYNC or some other method?
Does she need her own account?
Is there additional cost incurred if we have a shared VAULT?

Any help in further understanding of how Obsidian works is greatly appreciated, thanks!!

No.

yes, there is a plugin that makes it easier.

individual file size.

I use screen.garden and my wife and I type on the same files are the same time.

Thank you so much for the input and items to look into.

Which plugin would / will allow you to move data between vaults?

When you indicate that you use screen.garden to put in information at the same time, where is the vault? Local somewhere like a NAS? Synced? Or some other location?

Thankyou for the above information!!

All of those are fine.
I use it to sync 8 PCs, 2 ipads, and 2 iphones. You can also access the vault on their website. For non-obsidian users, I send them a link to the www instance on the screen.garden site. There are lots of settings here (who can access, when it expires, etc.)

You can just use computers and smartphones (as above) but I recently added another sync “node”, a docker hosted version of obsidian on my UNRAID.net (NAS).

Obsidian.MD has a sync and the benefit there is support of obsidian and it syncs the plugins as well.
Screen.Garden doesn’t sync the plugins. BUT … screen.garden allows you to sync as many vaults as you want, and you can sync partial vaults as in just one folder in your vault.

… we use Dropbox to share and edit that specific notebook. Can I share this new “vault?” …

Obsidian works flawlessly across dropbox. The only exception is that you and wife cant simultaneously edit the same note file at the same time. I have observed, while collaborating with a colleague, a 15-20 second delay from the instant when one of us types in new content and the other one sees it show up in their vault. It’s not a problem of having the same file open, it’s only a problem of simultaneous entry. Other than that dropbox does a great job of keeping synced.

Sorry for the late reply, and thanks you for the tool recommendation!!

I do like Dropbox as the Obsidian files are very small which doesn’t appear to both Obsidian. Recently ran into issues with Dropbox and OneNote Notebooks which is why I’m diving deeper into Obsidian. Will keep what you’ve said in mind as we are Dropbox users in my home.

Vaults are local / Dropbox which seems to be stable so far. Considering Obsidian Sync to help support the continuation of the project as well. Appreciate the input and suggestions!
