New Plugin: Floating Settings – open your Obsidian Settings in a separate window

Hey everyone!

I just published a plugin that I’ve personally wanted for a long time:

:gear: Floating Settings Plugin

This plugin lets you open Obsidian’s Settings panel in a fully separate popout window. Perfect for people with multiple monitors or who want to adjust settings without covering their workspace.

:white_check_mark: Features

  • Opens the default settings panel in a dedicated external window
  • Applies custom styling (full width & height, no background dimming)
  • Automatically removes the modal on close to avoid illegal access errors
  • Super lightweight – does one thing well

:package: Installation

Manually install by downloading the latest release from GitHub:
github .com/wambo121/Floating-Settings-for-Obsidian/tree/main

Unzip into .obsidian/plugins/floating-settings/ and enable it under Community Plugins

Do you plan for this plugin to either be a published community plugin or at least accessible through BRAT?

I’ve also seen the need for something like this, but I don’t want to start messing with such a manual installation (and update) procedure.

And does it allow for full editing in the main window, or not?

I have been using the Floating Settings plugin with the same name in the plugin library, and this plugin relies on another Floating plugin, which has become invalid after recent updates. Looking forward to your plugin being listed on BRAT or official plugin platforms

The plugin is currently undergoing the manual review process for publication in the official Obsidian store. I’m not familiar with BRAT yet, but I’ll check it out and see if it makes sense to release it there as well.

Yes, the main window remains fully editable and usable—that was precisely the main idea behind this plugin. For example, it allows you to quickly test theme changes and see how they look across different files.

My plugin doesn’t rely on external dependencies, so it should remain stable going forward. As mentioned earlier, it’s currently in the manual review stage for official listing. I’ll also look into BRAT to provide an alternative method of installation soon.

Great news – the plugin is available through BRAT!

If you’d like to try it out, just add the following GitHub repo to BRAT:

Magic. I’ve always wanted settings to open in a tab or new window! Hope to see this in the official store too.
