New items get created outside parent folder

We strongly recommend you to search the forum with possible keywords before submitting a new bug report. Please also try your repro steps with third-party plugins and custom CSS disabled and see if it’s still reproducible. If it’s an issue with third-party plugins or themes, try contacting the author for help. Once you’ve done the above, delete this line.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Create a new note
  2. type a non existing note name e.g. [[test]]
  3. click it and it will create a note that’s outside the folder the original note was in

Expected result

I thought it would keep the hierarchy of folders created and create a new item inside the most nested one

Actual result

Instead the notes and files (e.g. if you paste one) are all thrown outside into the “root” of all files, making it quite a mess which has to be moved each time.

Environment

  • Operating system: Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon
  • Obsidian version: v0.11.5

Take a good look at the included docs and the settings.

Missed that tiny option combing through the settings at least 5 times, sorry and thanks!

Hello, are you referring to ‘Files & Links → Default Location for new notes → Same folder as current file’ in the settings? The only issue with that is that you can’t select a folder. If you want to create a file in a specific folder, you first have to select another file within that folder, then click on ‘new note’. Otherwise, the new file will be created under the previously selected parent folder, which is not the folder you tried to click on.
