I totally used the wrong word. My brain meant ‘index’ as in book index - table of contents. Not search index. Everything was categorized like a department store. They had stewards of each department. But they did not excel at search. Google excelled at search, and won. Finding, I infer from this, was more important, and eventually far more efficient and scalable, than categorizing.
